Gutter Maintenance is Critical to Home Health
Gutter maintenance is one of the simplest ways to protect a home from expensive exterior and foundation damage. Gutters are designed to move rainwater safely away from the roofline, siding, landscaping, and foundation, but they can only do that when they are clear and securely attached. Over time, leaves, twigs, dirt, and asphalt shingle granules can build up inside the gutter system, restricting water flow and creating excess weight. When that debris sits wet for long periods, it can also speed up rust, corrosion, and deterioration. Regular cleaning and inspection help keep gutters flowing properly and allow homeowners to catch small issues before they turn into major repairs.
We recently inspected a townhome with unmaintained gutters. Excessive granules clogged them, causing water to back up. This led to wood rot, stained siding, and water pooling around the foundation. The heavy debris load, especially when mixed with rainwater, caused the gutters to pull away from the house because the strain loosened the fasteners. Shingle granules are especially problematic because they are dense, compact easily, and add surprising weight over time. Left unaddressed, failing gutters can lead to roof edge damage, mold and mildew growth, landscape erosion, basement moisture issues, and costly structural repairs. Consistent gutter maintenance helps preserve the integrity of the entire home and reduces the risk of preventable damage.
